Les lectures de Du Bois on bien tissé les suites de certaines propositions en effet propres :
- striving/strife : repris en thématisation centrale dans le numéro de centenaire The Crisis.
- et la crise. Une construction, autour du terme et de la notion, d'essai en essai dans The Souls.

114 : "I will not stop here to inquire whose duty it was [to assume group leadership and training of the Negro laborer], - whether that of the white ex-master who had profited by unpaid toil, or the Northern philanthropist whose persistence brought on the crisis, of the National Government whose edict freed the bondsmen"... Crisis here = the war.
127 : "Only by a union of intelligence and sympathy across the color-line in this critical period of the Republic shall justice and right triumph"... Crisis here = post-Emancipation. Période d'intégration civique, qui est aussi celle de l'installation de la ségrégation dans le Sud : soit le moment où se dénoue un rapport de "races" qui avait pu avoir des zones humaines et humanisantes.
136 : "till the inevitable Age of Reaction swept over the nationa and brought the crisis of to-day". "It is difficult to explain clearly the present critical stage of Negro religion". Crisis here = the brink des mouvements Reconstruction-Reaction-NAACP, Panaf Congresses, etc. The Crisis, 1910.
Temps présent, (présence africaine ; "the present-critical-stage" 136), "the pulsing Now" d'Alexander Crummel : 145, "Some seer he seemed, that came not from the crimson Past or the gray To-come, but from the pulsing Now. Sur la brèche de la color-line, et de son paradoxe dans "the great modern nation" 136, "modern culture" 146, "American civilisation".
Et le temps présent critique : lié à une modernité de la "Negro religion" : qu'il lie en généalogie aux socialités africaines de provenance et aux modes éthiques contemporains (the Lie, criminals and hypocrites, radicalism, revolt&revenge, "the peculiar ethical paradox" 137).
