A good stage last night, at the U of Kent lecture opportunity, for the question to arise, just the right path there, fortuitous terms in the flow of conversation : how do we connect this theorizing, and the rereading of a sequence in intellectual history (not this Saussure but that), with present concrete situations.
The chain of mediations is long but.
. each of the terms which we have available to think about cultures, nations, languages, peoples and the people, are heavy with the sedimentation of theoretical and ideological discourses, illuminating the layers and philologies is making the whole resonances avaible in each of their re-enunciation. Articulate a listening and refine the possibilities for debate, clarify the stakes, and the speech-acts within those mobile coordinates as they come. Saussure, and the successive denegations of Saussure, are woven into the DNA of much of these discursive arenas; clarifying all around those particular ties affords much light on the most general issues. (Of course also the simple reminder that any discussion of practice is shot through with theory, a matter of understanding where and how to look for it.)
. moment of shift in the age of Globalization. We are all sensing the change, media is full of the recognition and suspended sense of perplexity as to what is changing, what is happening, and where things are going. How to read, how to plan for. My take is to look at the shift around the moyeu that is the relation of culture to politics, with its Global age characteristics - a certain nouage working as stress force on the nation-state form - and what is happening to it in this populist moment. The new articulation, which of course will rehearse old discourses (reminiscences of the 30s, and many more available points of comparison etc.), but will be novel and do require observation, analysis, and strategic thinking.
