Culture, ideology, hegemony - the Theory years

I thought Hebdige would do this for me: cut across from my people and sect train of thought and bring back the 70s line of semiotic critique for a useful, sharp, splice effect. Subculture. The Meaning of Style, missed at the time, but like Policing the Crisis and Resistance Through Ritual (yet unread) and The Popular Arts (read and revived in my current reading mind), identified de longue date as a needed step through.
Very good indeed to retrace the story of Cultural Studies and its own auto-mythical narrative. From "Culture and Society" as retold by Williams, and from Hoggart (like the Frankfurt School nostalgic of working-class sociality and horrified by mass culture), to the Eliot expansion (from literature and literacy to "anthropology" - well, ok, more or less), Barthes, EP Thompson (ooh acid in calling them the "gentlemen amateurs"), Althusser, and through Volosinov, Marx and Engels, Hall, to come and rest in Gramsci. Retracing means, for now and beyond the lyricism of my own (mythical, and in fact missed, precisely : this is were I was not, having taken the generational boat in France, and in the petit bourgeois petite fille general morality) generation, a useful repointing of references.

The processing of definitions though; the story of concepts, perfectly usable now for the mulling over peuple et langage : emergence of the concept of culture, through its history first and in its novel critical application (CS, uncomfortable first, trammelled up in literature and literacy - then more confidently flipped over to the sphere of semiotics and ideological semantics); then the morphing into the problematic of ideology, followed by the Gramsci years of looking at, testing, the criticality of hegemony.
The critical process here is this conceptual transformation of "meanings" into social relations, and cultural forms into power issues. Historical.
The history, again, of conceptualizing the articulation of language (sign systems, discourse) with social history.
